Why: I always hold off on bands that are praised as 'the next --->insert legendary band name here<---'. I also held off of Interpol because every Interpol fan I met was hugely pretentious, and condescending. Come off it, we all have Lionel Richie on our ipods, stop pretending like yours only contains Pitchfork's best of...ANYWAYS I loved 'Turn on the bright lights' at first but was turned off by the hype and the snobbery so Interpol slipped off the radar because, to quote Sloan, "its not the band I hate, its their fans". That is until I heard "Our Love To Admire", another break-up album, hells yea! I'm telling you break up albums are the best kind of albums!!! ANYWAYS! This album is a masterpiece, slow moving, painful, unforgettable and fucking beautiful! The lyrics alone warrant everlasting praise, Paul Banks is indeed a musical genius(and my gosh don't he know it!). The bass is my favourite instrument so I love how you can hear--no feel it in every song! This album breaks my heart and yes I love it!!!!

Best of 2007: Our Earthly Pleasures

Who: Maxïmo Park
What: Our Earthly Pleasures

Why: And I thought 'A Certain Trigger' was good??? Maxïmo Park once again delivers...and holy shit is it ever good! This band is so good that I'm reduced to just grunting and groaning at explaining how fucking brilliant they are! Our Earthly Pleasures is just, ugh, so fucking amazing! I would describe Maxïmo Park as the Brit Rock version of Leonard Cohen because every song is a story, no formula (i.e. verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-the end), just stories of past loves and loves lost! Methinks this is Paul Smith's break-up album(which are the best kinds of albums!) but its not depressing, or self-loathing, or angry, it has songs you could get mad crunk to, songs to cry to, songs to break your heart, songs to rock out to, and songs to fall in love with. This album, is fucking brilliant, you need this album! And what I appreciate most about Maxïmo Park's music is that you can always break out into dance!

Personal Stories: I saw them live, the venue was tiny and I was right in front of Paul and Lukas, and fuck that was THE best concert I've ever been to, NO LIE! And HOLY can Paul Smith dance! He grooves, he busts every move imaginable, and he leaps 6ft in the air...he also sweats a whole lot but the point is, Maxïmo Park is EPIC live, and have made me a life time fan because of it!

Best of 2007: Dexter Season Two

Who: Dexter (AKA The Bay Harbor Butcher), Deb, Angel, Doakes, Rita, Agt. Lundy, Lilia Laguerta, and of course Harry Morgan

Category: [Cable] Television
Why: Have you seen this show? No srsly have you seen this show! Particularly this season, because every single episode was pure genius! Last season was all about getting to know Dexter; who was this guy who enacts vigilante justice on the streets of Miami, why is he like this, was he bad or good. This season, however, was all about catching Dexter, the kicker of course being, Dexter, working for the Miami PD, was essentially trying to help catch himself while trying to evade the FBI at the same time. Every episode, was edge of your seat "holy shit what's going to happen next" goodness, it doesn't get any better than this! The ending of this season broke my heart because, ugh, Daokes...err sorry no spoilers here. This season was ACE, rent it, NO, buy it! It's fucking brilliant, trust me!
Highlights: I'm not trying to be lazy here but in all honesty, THE ENTIRE SEASON!

Best of 2007: Flight of the Conchords

Who: Bret, Jemaine, Murray, and Mel
What: Flight of the Conchords
Category: [Cable] Television
Why: Who knew such a simple concept could bring on so many laughs
Highlights: Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros, David Bowie appearing to Bret in a dream, they boys trying acid, inner city pressure, the boys overcoming racisim, Bret's angry dance AND the best Lord of the Rings Tribute, like EVER!
Personal Stories: Um nothing major, just laughing my ass off every Monday night and youtubing the songs every other day

Its December, the last month of the year, when everyone makes their best of 2007 lists and I thought, since my exams are over, why not? My Best of 2007 starts today, and its kind of fitting that we start of with a band that's kind of changed my life (and my musical taste).

Nathan, Matthew, Caleb, and Jared Followill

What: Because of the Times

Why: The best effort by the Kings yet but still there's WAY more geniosity swimming through Caleb's head!
Highlights: Knocked Up, Charmer,McFearless, True Love Way, Arizona, Ragoo
Personal Stories: I saw them live, I became obsessed from that point on. AND Jared totally made eye contact with me at least 6 different times...shut up! If the most beautiful man in the world graces you with his gaze, you'd freak out too, don't lie!

You want rock n' roll, and I mean REAL rock n' roll, this is it! Sex, drugs, pregnancy, true love, brothels, brotherly love, and all to a wicked ass rifts. Wondering what's happened to the state of music, well Kings of Leon are here to save it. With endless touring and downright magical records, the Kings are getting more popular as time passes! 'The Story' as its called, is now secondary, having proving themselves 3 times over, who cares that they're the sons of a traveling preacher?


The rifts are off the hook! Jared's base line, you can feel it in your belly! Nathan keeps the beat going! Matthew rocks it out like a true legend! But what of Caleb? Caleb's vocals paired with his lyrics, ugh, you feel that shit in your soul! Sometimes you want to get pissed at the world, sometimes you want to get pissed drunk, other times you feel drunk on love! The emotions are raw, real, and no matter what's happening in your life, you feel Caleb's tortured soul when you listen to this album! Rolling Stone gave this album 4 stars out of 5, which is pretty damn good, right? Well to any fan, we know better! This one's off the charts, son! The King's song's are very personal, as in when you listen to them, its like "holy shit, that's totally about me!" that's how much it speaks to your soul!

Why is Because of the Times the best of 2007? Well let's forget the fact that I'm a rabid fan, and let's concentrate on its greatness. This album is ancient, essential, timeless, forever, pure! It's what music should be, needs to be! Kings of Leon are my heart, and Because of the Times is my soul!!!
