Derek Boogaard (1982-2011)
I wanted to start my onslaught of posts with this.
On Friday May 13th Derek Boogaard of the New York Rangers was found dead in his apartment, he was only 28. Boogaard was a fan favourite and the team enforcer. We don't know the cause of death yet. It was announced today that his family decided to donate his brain to Boston University so that they could study the affects physical sport has on the brain. Nothing has been released as to whether or not this had anything to do with his death.
I wonder if people really understand what athletes go through just to be the best, and do they care once their careers are over. MacLeans did an article on the 1985 Chicago bears a few months back, aptly titled, 'The Sad News Bears'. This was a team that is regarded as one of the best teams in the history of sport but a lot of them have lead tragic lives or tragic ends after the lights went out on their careers.
But here's where Boogaard differs, he was 28 years old at the apex of his career, why did he die? 28 is far to young! I just hope we get anwers.
My prayers are with his family, his friends, and his teammates. Goodbye Boogeyman!
